TOPS for Hoops
Bringing the joy and excitement of basketball to young athletes with disabilities
This program provides children with disabilities the opportunity to play basketball through rule and equipment adaptation. Athletes between the ages of 6 and 16 are invited to participate in a modified game of basketball once a week. Everyone from anywhere is welcome.
A volunteer group of “Junior Coaches” serve as one-on-one buddies with TOPS athletes.

Saturday Night Hoops
Saturday Night Hoops, a fun, recreational basketball program at WHS that is open to all Winchester boys in grades 9 through 12 regardless of where they attend high school.
The program is held on six consecutive Saturday evenings, starting in January. The program provides friendly competition with games each week and playoffs on the last night. Boys will be divided into evenly matched teams and play with the same team throughout the program.
Included in the cost of the program, players will receive t-shirts and there will be music, pizza, and drinks each week.
Open to: Boys, 9th-12th grades
Skills Clinic: 3rd Grade
The WBA Skills Clinic runs each Saturday from December through February. The purpose of the clinic is for children of all abilities to have fun, learn to love basketball and improve their individual and team skills.
The clinic content varies but includes fundamental skills like dribbling, shooting, footwork, defense and passing as well as 3v3 and 5v5 games. No previous basketball experience is required.

Recreational League Basketball
This program provides a competitive alternative to the existing Travel Basketball program, which requires a greater time commitment and cost.
Recreational league basketball is open to players at all skill levels and will offer scheduled league games. All sessions begin with 45 minutes of skills and drills followed by team play. Players will be divided into balanced teams, receive WBA shirts, and play games against their friends!
The league runs for 12 weeks on Saturday mornings beginning in December at McCall Middle School.
Please note that players registered for Travel Basketball are NOT eligible to participate in the recreational league.
Parent volunteers are appreciated.
Open to: Girls & Boys, Grades 6th-8th
Travel Basketball 2020-21
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, plans for the 2020-21 WBA Travel basketball (Grades 5-8) season are subject to a number of variables, including, first and foremost, whether or not the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will actually permit basketball games to be played. That’s a variable over which the WBA obviously has no control, and we do not yet know what the state will decide.
Assuming, however, that travel basketball (Grades 5-8) is permitted, the WBA is open to registration for travel players as follows:
* In partnership with MetroWest Basketball LLC and a group of local towns, the WBA expects to offer travel basketball from January 2021 through March 2021 as follows:
- Home and away games will be played at Millworks (Westford, MA - 45 minute drive) on Saturdays and Sundays with all participants, including players, coaches, and officials, required to wear masks. At this time, a maximum of two coaches and one parent per player will be permitted in the facility. Teams will be capped at ten (10) players.
- For competitive reasons, some WBA teams may be able to play in the Metrowest League with games limited to the following sites: Mass Premier (Foxborough - 60-minute drive) and Dana Barros (Stoughton). These games will be played on Friday evenings, Saturdays or Sundays. The Covid protocols at the Metrowest Option 2 sites have not yet been officially determined. At a minimum, MetroWest will follow the Massachusetts safety standards for youth sports. At this time, it isnot known whether masks will be required or optional at these facilities (again, assuming basketball games are permitted). Teams will be capped at ten (10) players.
As to both scenarios above, it’s important for families to know that the WBA currently does not have any arrangement for practice space - either for pre-season tryouts or the regular season. We are working to arrange for practice space at Millworks and exploring other arrangements. However, it remains unlikely that the Winchester Public Schools will permit youth teams to practice in their gyms this season. Further, assuming Option 1 or Option 2 is available, the structure of the teams will require additional thought. The simplest method, particularly for Grades 6-8, would be to keep the same teams as last year.
